Oldest parliamentarian Rishang Keishing retires after seven decades in politics

Rishang Keishing, 94-year-old Rajya Sabha member and former four time Chief Minister of Manipur is the oldest serving parliamentarian in the world.

He was elected to the first Lok Sabha in 1952 as a member of the Socialist Party in the opposition. The former school teacher had served also two tenure in Rajya Sabha and two tenures in Lok Sabha. He joined Congress in 1962.


His term in the upper house of Indian parliament ends on 9 April, 2014. However, he has decided to voluntarily retire on 21 February 2014. He is from Bungpa village, Ukhrul District in Manipur.
