State election commission kickstarts delimitation process in three tier panchayats


The state election commission issued draft notification of delimitation in the three-tier Panchayati Raj system on Tuesday the  11th, Feb 2014 . The notification concerned delimitation of 591 Gram Panchayats, 35 Panchayat Samity and 8 Zilla Parishad and a recent decision of reservation of seats in the panchayats.

The notification said that the commission would accept claims and objections from February 11. Objections are open to be filed till February 17 following which public hearings would be started. All public hearings should be completed by February 20, the notification read.
Final list of delimited and reserved gram panchayats and other PRI bodies would be published on February 24. The next panchayat election of Tripura scheduled to be held in 2015 would be held according to the revised list, an official of the state election commission said here today. The official further added that the state government is hoping to conduct the 2020 Tripura panchayat election with the new list as well.
The state is hoping to introduce the Constitutional amendment allowing 50 percent reservation for women in the panchayats in the upcoming panchayat election. The Tripura state legislative assembly unanimously passed two bills enhancing reservation for women in three-tier panchayats including village councils in the ADC and urban local bodies from 33 percent to 50 percent in 2010.
