She left home and country for love but landed in jail instead.
Fifteen – year - old Sumitra of Abhoynagar village under Hrishyamukh area of South Tripura crossed the border to marry the boy she fell in love with and is now in Chittagong Central Jail of Bangladesh for the past six months.
Sumitra’s name has been changed to Fatema Begam after converting to Islam and marrying 22 – year - old Nizamuddin of South Angshapur village under Chhagalnaiya police station in Feni district of Bangladesh in February last year.
Soon after, Bangladesh police arrested her from Nizam’s house for entering into Bangladesh Territory without valid passport and subsequently Sumitra landed in jail.
Sumitra’s village is right at Indo - Bangladesh border and her family has a small plot of farmland near the fencing. She met Nizam here and both worked out their escape plan.

The only politician of India to celebrate silver jubilee as the chief minister breaking the record of late Communist leader Jyoti Basu who is considered longest serving chief minister by holding the post in West Bengal for more than 23 years from June 21,1977 to Nov 5,2000.

The Assembly elections, which were held alongside the Lok Sabha polls, seem to matter more to the people in Sikkim than others.
The SDF also won the lone Lok Sabha seat when its candidate P D Rai defeated main rival Tek Nath Dhakal with approximately 42000 votes. Since the state sends only one member to the lower house due to its low population, so people were more excited about Assembly polls . He formed the Sikkim Democratic Front party on March 4, 1993 with the core principle to uphold democracy, justice, liberty and development aspirations of the people which swept the polls in the 1994 Assembly elections and subsequently led his party to massive victory in the assembly elections held in the year 1999, 2004 , 2009 and 2014.
The party has won Assembly polls five times in a row, and on every occasion the party has won clear and decisive mandate by getting absolute majority in the assembly.

Process of power selling to B’desh from Tripura starts rolling

Tripura government has made all out efforts to facilitate bilateral survey team of India and Bangladesh for transporting power from 726 MW generation capacity combine cycle gas - based Palatana power plant of South Tripura to neighbouring country.
Talking to media persons, Power Minister Manik Dey said before announcement of the schedule of 2014 general election in March, Ministry of Power had constituted a seven member feasibility study team for power selling from Palatana to Bangladesh in persuasion of Left Front government of Tripura.
The team comprises experts and top officials of both India and Bangladesh.
The officials were asked to file a detailed report on the feasibility of transporting power from Suryamaninagar power grid of Tripura to nearest Bangladesh power grid in Comilla or Brahmanbaria district of Bangladesh.
“Ministry of Power recently, sought our view to send the expert team for field level study and other important aspects to sell power to Bangladesh from Tripura and we made it clear that the state will extend all possible cooperation to execute the task at the earliest,” Mr Dey said.
He however, pointed out that Tripura government is keen to sell power to Bangladesh since inception of Palatana plant and upcoming Monarchak power project a decade ago considering its proximity and cooperation extended by Sheikh Hasina government in Bangladesh for transportation of over dimensional consignments for Palatana.
“During her last visit to Tripura, Ms Hasina demanded surplus sell- able power from Tripura and Chief Minister Manik Sarkar responded positively and took up the matter repeatedly with Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Power,” Mr Dey maintained.
Transporting power to nearest Bangladesh grid from Tripura grid is hardly covering a distance of 50- 80 Km, which marginalised the transmission loss and also reduce the cost of power transportation comparing to selling power from Indian states through Bongaigoan, he added.
Meantime, Bangladesh has also taken up the matter with its Indian counterpart to purchase power from Tripura projects and finally, the Union government has responded and constituted a committee for feasibility.
“If everything goes well, by end of the year, 2nd unit of Palatana with generation capacity of 363 MW and 104 MW Monarchak power project will also be operational, which will generate surplus at least 160- 170 MW power daily at optimum level of production and we have to sell the power,” Mr Dey said, adding that selling power to Bangladesh will further strengthen bilateral relation between two countries and to pay recognition to Bangladesh’s cooperation.
He, however, stated that NEEPCO financed Monarchak power project has been getting delayed due to non- availability of required gas supply from ONGC but the way, work is progressing, by next six months, it would start generation.

CPI (M)’s Bengal rout overshadows Tripura wins

As expected the CPI (M) has won both the Lok Sabha seats in Tripura by massive margins, but jubilation of the party rank and file is visibly absent owing to shocking defeats elsewhere, particularly in West Bengal. Both the Left candidates, Jitendra Choudhury in reserved East Tripura (R) and Shankar Prasad Datta in West Tripura constituencies have defeated Congress rivals by over three lakh votes.
Interesting feature of the results is Congress has managed to secure the second position ending speculations over surge of the Trinamool Congress that routed the Left in West Bengal. Altogether 25 candidates including three women contested in both seats and most them lost deposit.
Jitendra Choudhury, Forest and Industry minister, polled 4,33,518 and his nearest Sachindra Tripura of Congress got 96,436. Trinamool Congress candidate Bhriguram Reang was third with 50,493 votes.
In West Tripura, the result is almost same with Shankar Prasad Datta of CPI(M) getting 4,75,120 votes and Professor Arunoday Saha collecting 1,14,600 votes. Trinamool Congress state chairman Ratan Chakraborty got 78,048 votes.
Though counting of votes completed by noon, results were not officially declared for a considerable time for absence of clearance from the election commission. Counting in East Tripura constituency was halted for sometime due to technical snag in an EVM.
Lok Sabha election in Tripura was marred by controversies with all opposition parties accusing Chief Electoral Officer Ashutosh Jindal of collaborating with the ruling CPI (M) of manipulating entire poll exercise. Street agitations, rallies and a general strike enforced by a few parties followed.

Rise and shine: 5 ways to wake up feeling fresh every morning

Simple tips to become a morning person. Fatigue and lethargy are common conditions, but they are not taken seriously. We hope that as the day advances, we will perk up.
Or we down cuploads of coffee, hoping the caffeine will kick in...
But the dullness is more than just “ something in the mind”. It is often the result of an out of kilter metabolism, a broad word that covers the functioning of other major systems in the body as well.
It may have a psychological trigger – dislike of one’s job, a new responsibility ( like a baby or a spouse), lack of supportive help at home, a challenging or even long commute.
While the dullness could be a symptom of any of these, it could in turn trigger seemingly unrelated chronic problems such as migraine, insomnia, food cravings, constipation, caffeine or tobacco addiction ( in a bid to feel some energy), nausea, joint pains or weakened immunity.
The last named creates the ideal conditions for more sickness.
Shameem Akthar, yogacharya trained by the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre, shows you how to break this vicious cycle and rise and shine every morning.
Yoga stretches
Yoga stretches can magically squeeze and wring out tiredness.
The yastikasana ( stick pose) can be done even when in bed.
Pass arms overhead, bringing palms together. Bring feet together. Inhale. As you exhale, stretch from both sides as if somebody is dragging you by hands and feet, in opposite directions.
This helps release dullness from the entire body.
A similar stretch, done standing, is the tadasana ( also called ‘ mountain pose’ or the ‘ palmtree pose’).
Do a full body stretch as explained above, but on your toes.
The stretches used in the morning are marjariasana ( cat stretch), and druta utkatasana ( dynamic squat pose).
These poses also initiate peristalsis, sorting out constipation problems.
Acupressure points
Apart from stretching your full body, these yoga poses work by pressing into acupressure points that stimulate the brain.
Try other pressure points directly.
Press with your thumb, or any dominant finger, between the eyebrows, at the indent nestled between the eyebrows and where the nostril meets this junction. This is the pressure point that is meant to wake up the mind.
The pressure applied should be firm, consistent and last up to a minute or up to three minutes.
Another “ wake- up” pressure point area is the ear lobes.
Pulling at them gently but firmly will also wake you up.
Aroma relief Research by Japanese companies has found that certain aroma oils can enhance work performance.
It’s an amazingly simple trick to wake you up. Sprinkle a citrusy aroma oil on a handkerchief, on in a diffuser, or as a dab ( when the oil is mixed with carrier oils like sunflower, coconut etc) on the skin, for an immediate high.
Citrus oils are phototoxic, which means you cannot apply them on the skin and go out immediately ( it reacts with sunlight). So, use discreetly.
These oils also help fight depression. Some oils should not be used on infants, the very weak, pregnant women, or those with epilepsy.
Safer oils are the aphrodisiacs — ylang ylang, geranium, jasmine, rose, and sandalwood – which give an immediate high without dangerous side- effects.
They perk up the mood, yet initiate calmness - an ideal combination for the start of a hard day.
Mudra for aid There are a few mudras ( hand gestures) that work the air and ether elements more dominantly, according to yoga. The use of labels like air or ether elements is just to indicate the aspects of the nervous system that get dominant and are not psychic as many rationalists believe.
The hands play a dominant role in the brain map, and mudras exploit that.
Touching the tip of the index finger to the tip of the thumb (vayu mudra), the tip of the middle finger to the tip of the thumb (akash mudra) or the tip of the middle finger and the index finger to the tip of the thumb (vayu karaak mudra/ increasing the air element) are all regarded as stimulating to the brain.
However, avoid this when feeling hyper- anxious or hyperactive, for obvious reasons! Plan something to look forward to Do not stack up the next day’s planner with things you “ have to do”. When people are scrunched for time or feel crowded or overworked, they do the wrong thing and stack up the next day with things that must be done.
Not only will the pending work remain unfinished, but the new tasks will also be neglected, making you feel even more distracted, upset, low or give you the sense of lack of control. Instead, plan a few fun things – sit in front of your aquarium with your morning cup; listen to a new CD or a new radio channel; take a new route on your morning walk; invite a friend to exercise along with you… The things you plan should add to the fun and joy of the day and should definitely not be a task or a chore! Sub- consciously this makes you look forward to waking up and removes the sense of lethargy at a very subliminal level

Seven positives of General Election 2014

1. Highest turnout ever: This elec tion has been one of the most hyped ever but in the end it was worth it. The previous highest national turnout was in 1984 which also happened to be the Indira Gandhi sympathy wave. That stood at 64%. The 2014 one stands at 66.4%: This despite the fact that it was conducted over a marathon 36 days and mainly in the sweltering heat.
Now think of all those missing voters in the electoral lists and all those who didn’t vote thanks to errors on the voting card and you know how the Election Commission has bungled up big time and could have taken that figure even higher.
2. Politicians on their toes: During election time, politicians usually get away with irresponsible statements and acts. The model code of conduct has been deterring them steadily, but this time all the politicians were on their toes as a record number of FIRs were filed and political leaders were pulled up across party lines. The only downer was allegations of bias favouring the Congress and against the BJP.3. The anti- corruption theme: In one way this vote has been the end of the anti- corruption movement that began in 2010 and saw the August Kranti agitation of 2011 and the launch of the Aam Aadmi Party.
Plus this time it has been different.
1989 was just a reaction to Bofors. This time corruption is a much larger theme and the Lokpal was introduced. Post- 2014 people will not be satisfied with mere probes and will demand for more concrete action.
4. Social media: Usually people just get to get their voice heard once every five years. Not this time where they were heard each and every day. No new big scams have resurfaced for quite some time now, and public memory is usually very short.
Not so with social media where every old Tweet, article and photo is pulled out to embarrass the politicians.
And every year in India there is some election or the other ( like the Assembly and municipal ones), so social media voters will keep applying the pressure in the run up to these elections.
5. Yet another alternative: People tired of Congress moved to the BJP. People tired of both the Congress and BJP moved to the AAP. The AAP had a brilliant launch pad but squandered it through first joining hands with the Congress and then letting it go when people were OK with the arrangement.
They made it worse by vigilantism, dharnas, attacks and dramas. No matter how good they fare, they could have been much better had they play their cards right. However, they still have a base to make it big in 2019.
It is still possible for all the AAP to win back a lot of the middle class it lost by 2019.
Alternatives have emerged elsewhere too. Tamil Nadu has a Third Front in the form of NDA as the BJP has tied up with the non- DMK non- ADMK players. West Bengal finally has a non- Congress non- CPM option in the BJP. Funnily the BJP is gaining ground in the Northeast and Kerala too. All in all the BJP might finally become a permanent national party and India will officially enter a 2- alliance system much better than the Congress monopoly or Third Front nonsense.
6. Political indifference uncool: Till now everyone found it cool to either not vote or not be involved with a political party. That has changed this time. Celebrities and professionals in large numbers are getting associated with some party or the other. Bollywood is writing letters in support of “ secular” parties.
The youth has been politicized and exposed to the grandest electoral campaign ever. Political indifference, which has led politicians to behave with impunity, is out of the window.
7. End of the Delhi clique: It is always unhealthy for a small group of individuals to have a stranglehold over all opinions and debates, but that is exactly what had been happening till now. But now the doors have been opened and all manner of people all over India have made their voice heard in this election and not just the Delhi clique.

Gandhi's letters accusing son of rape to be auctioned in UK

Explosive personal letters in which Mahatma Gandhi accuses his eldest son Harilal of incest and rape are to be auctioned in England next week, according to the Press Trust of India.

Mullock’s Auctioneers are hoping to fetch between 50,000 to 60,000 pounds for the set of three letters written by Mahatma Gandhi in 1935 in which he expresses his concerns over the behaviour of Harilal.

In one of his letter, Gandhi accuses Hiralal of sexually harassing his daughter Manu.

In the letter, written in June 1935 after Manu had visited her grandfather in Ahmedabad, Gandhi wrote: 'Manu is telling me number of dangerous things about you. She says that you had raped her before eight years and she was so much hurt that medical treatment was also to be taken.'

Another letter, also autographed by Gandhi, urges his son to 'please let me have the pure truth, please tell me if you are still interested in alcohol and debauchery. I wish that you would rather die than resort to alcohol in any manner.'

In another letter, a distraught Gandhi tell Hiralal: 'You should know that your problem has become much more difficult for me even more than our national freedom. Manu is telling me a number of dangerous things about you.'

Harilal had renounced ties with his father in 1911, after Gandhi refused to provide him a western education saying that it would not help in the freedom struggle against the British Raj.

Mullock’s in a statement said: 'The letters are written in Gujarati and are in good condition. These have come via descent from a branch of Gandhi’s family to the present vendor. As far as we are aware they have never before been seen in public and as such they provide remarkable new information on the troubled relationship Gandhi had with his son.'

THE 10 AVATARS OF VISHNU AS PER HINDU MYTHOLOGY

1.Matsya the fish :- In the earliest yuga (era) of Sata-yuga, a king named Manu was performing severe penance for thousands of years. One day as he was performing ablutions with river water, a small fish came into his hands and just as he was about to throw the fish back into the river, the fish requested the king to save its life. Heeding its request, the king put the fish into a jar of water but the fish started growing and the jar was not big enough for it. Then the king threw it into the river, but it soon it outgrew the river and the king then threw it into Ganges and then into the ocean. The king realised that it was Lord Vishnu himself and then the lord made an appearance and made a special request to the king. It predicted that the world would come to an end by a huge flood in seven days and requested the king to build a huge boat and take the seven sages(hermits), seeds of all plants, one animal of each type and told him that he would appear as a fish to propel the boat to Mount Himavan for surviving the flood to the next yuga(eon). True to his word, after seven days the Lord appeared and the king tied the boat to the fish by using the royal serpent Vasuki and the fish took all of them to Mt Himavan and kept them there till the flood was over and in the new era, the king started procreation a for the new era.

2.Kurma  the Tortoise :-Further to Pralaya- deluge at the beginning of the present Kalpa the Gods (devas) lost their immortality due to a curse by the short-tempered sage Durvasa. The sage had once presented a garland of flowers to Indra, king of gods, who carelessly gave it away to his elephant which trampled it.  The Devas approached Vishnu for help. Vishnu then asked them to churn the ocean of milk after adding medicines into the ocean. Mt Mandara could be used a the churning stick he said. He requested them to ask them help of Asuras in lifting the mountain in exchange for offer of the share of nectar of immortality that would ensue from the churning. Both the devas and the asuras churned the ocean using the serpent Vasuki as the rope. At the start, playing a Machiavellian trick, Indra, king of the gods asked the asuras for the head end of vasuki. But asuras suspecting foul play, took the head end, only to be deceived as the poison from Vasuki was slowly weakening them. But as churning was proceeding the mountain was sinking and then Lord Vishnu took the form of the tortoise KURMA and kept the mountain afloat. As soon as the bowl of amrita, the nectar of immortality was out, the asuras grabbed it. Then Lord Vishnu took the form of an apsara, a beautiful maiden, and seduced the asuras into letting her distribute the nectar and also to abide by her order of distribution. As soon as the devas were served the maiden disappeared thus totally deceiving the asuras and making them totally weak.

3.Varaha  the Boar :- A demon Hiranyaksha, had prayed for Lord Brahma and got awarded a boon that no beast nor man nor god could kill him. But somehow from the list of beasts the name of boar was missing. This proved to be his lacunae. He then started a campaign of plunder across the worlds. He pushed the world to the Pataal loka, or the under of the sea. He stole the Vedas, the holy scriptures from the Lord Brahma, while he was asleep and performed huge atrocities. To retrieve the Vedas and to save the world the Lord Vishnu assumed the role of a boar and brought out the earth from the under of the ocean, using its two tusks. It then killed Hiranyaksha and retrieved the Vedas from the asura and brought it back to the safe custody of the Lord Brahma.

4.Narashima  giant lion-man :- In NARASIMHA Avatar, Lord Vishnu incarnates himself as a semi-man,semi-lion in this world. The king of demons(asuras), Hiranyakasyapu, wanted to become immortal and wanted to remain young forever. To this end, he meditated for Lord Brahma and because of his severe penance, the gods were frightened and asked Brahma to pacify the king. Brahma was impressed by his austerity and granted him a wish. Hiranyakasyapu wished that he be  killed neither by a man or beast, nor in daylight or at night and neither inside or outside a building. Having obtained the wish he considered himself the supreme God and forbade all worship of gods by anyone. But his son Prahlada, was an ardent devotee of Vishnu. This enraged Hiranyakasyapu very much. He ordered numerous ways to kill Prahlada including asking his sister Holika to sit with Prahlada in the fire. But every time Prahlada escaped unhurt. Enraged, once he asked Prahlad to show him the Lord Vishnu. Prahlad said, "He is everywhere". Further enraged, Hiranyakasyapu knocked down a pillar, and asked if Lord was present there. Lord Vishnu then emerged as a half lion, half man from the pillar, and carried him under the arch of the doorway (neither indoors nor outdoors), and the time was evening (in the twilight), neither night nor day. He then killed Hiranyakasyapu with his  claws by keeping him on his thighs (neither on earth nor in the sky) thus saving the life of his devotee Prahlada.

5.Vamana  the dwarf :- BALI, the grandson of Prahlada was a very valorous and mighty asura. By his penance and might, he conquered the whole world. Indra and other gods fearing that he and the asuras would conquer all the three worlds, went to Lord Vishnu for help. Lord Vishnu was then born as a dwarf Vamana in the household of a brahman priest. He went to Bali on growing up and asked for alms. Bali was delighted to offer him anything he requested even though his royal guru warned him that it was Lord Vishnu. Vamana then requested for the amount of land that could come under his three feet. Bali gracefully agreed. Lord Vishnu then grew in size and covered the earth and heaven in two stride. And due to lack of space, he put his third leg on Bali himself and crushed Bali to the nether or the Patala loka (underground world), thus helping the Gods out.

6.Parasurama Rama with the axe :- In PARASURAMA Avatar, Lord Vishnu incarnates himself as a brahman priest in this world. He was brought in this world to avenge all kshatriyas who had become arrogant and were suppressing the brahmans in the world. He was born with unusual physical power, and became better fighter than any Kshatriya. He was born to Jamadagni and Renuka, and belonged to the Brighu clan. Parashurama was always carrying an axe presented to him by Lord Shiva of whom he was an ardent devotee. Kartavirya a powerful king, once went to Jamadagni's home when he was out, and after a meal, stole the Kamadhenu cow, which was supposed to give endless quantity of milk. Jamadgni was enraged and he went and killed the king and brought Kamadhenu back. On hearing this the son of the king came back and killed Jamdagni. Parasurama was enraged at this and went and avenged the death of his father by killing all kshatriyas in 21 battles. His life is story of the supremacy of brahmans over the kshatriyas.

7.Sri Rama  :- It is the most important Avatar of Vishnu. Rama represents the peak of the historic incarnations, and by him it is defined the ideal character of Indian people. He is Vishnu descended upon earth to conquer all the Indian peninsula, included Sri Lanka, under the Bharata rule. Lord Rama is one of the most adored gods in India. He is always holding a bow and arrow indicating his readiness to destroy evils. His story forms the epic Ramayana. He is perfect in every aspect; the perfect man, the perfect husband, the perfect brother, the perfect king, etc. and the obedient son. Commonly he is pictured in a family style, with his wife Sita, and brother Lakshman.

8.Sri Krishna :- In KRISHNA Avatar, Lord Vishnu incarnates himself as KRISHNA , the central character in the epic MAHABHARATA. In this biggest epic of Indian mythology a myriad of topics are covered, including war, love, brotherhood, politics etc. It is essentially the story of two warring groups of cousin brothers, the PANDAVAs and the KAURAVAs. As a part of the Mahabahrata, during the war KRISHNA, gives a long discourse to his disciple ARJUNA, collectively termed as Bhagvad-Gita. Krishna, during his child-hood was responsible for the killing of Kansa. Krishna is also considered to be an ultimate playboy who was resonsible for charming all gopikas (cowherdesses) around him. Unlike Ramayana, Mahabharata deals with more down to earth issues like politics, human nature, human weaknesses, and does not attempt to idealise the characters as in RAMAYANA. His death marks the beginning of Kali yuga.

9.Buddha :- With the departure of Lord Krishna (Krishna Avatar), the Kali yuga set in. In this age, the true devotion to Vedas was replaced by empty rituals.  To enlighten the world, Lord Vishnu descended the earth as Buddha, the enlightened one.
He was born as the crown prince of the Kapilavastu to King  Suddhodana and Maya. He was named Siddhartha, meaning "All thing fulfilled". But his mother died soon after his birth and was broughtup by Prajapati, the sister of Maya. Buddha was saddened by death of living creatures, and vices like poverty. He wasn't happy with any answers that were provided to him and he decided to find out the meaning and the absolute truth and he left his wife and child to a hermit's life in the forest and became the enlightened one.
His preachings spawned off the religion of Buddhism now popular across the whole world. Buddha advocated the Middle Path, in which he offered a balanced, harmonious way of life, steering between two extremes of self-indulgence and total abstinence. Buddhism rests upon four Noble Truths:
Suffering is universal,
It is caused by desire and yearning
Suffering can be prevented and overcome and
Eradication of desires can lead to removal of suffering.
To prevent suffering one has to conquer craving and desire and this conquest leads to the attainment of nirvana or complete enlightenment.

10.Kalki is believed as the next Avatar of Vishnu :- It is believed that He will appear, riding his white horse and drawing a flaming sword, at the end of the Kali Yuga, the dark age through which we are now passing. His task will be to exterminate the evil and restore the Dharma. Thus will begin a new cycle, starting with the new Satya Yuga.

Google's self-driving car reverie now a dream come true

Google's self-driving dream car project has become a reality, owing to the immense amount of progress that it has made in its recent years.
The organization shared valuable information about its invention and the success that the project has received. The project was started initially in 2009 under Sebastian Thrun, CEO and cofounder of Udacity, with a focus on negotiating freeways but features such as pedestrian and cyclist detection, sign reading and other advanced software models that have been recently incorporated.
Recent other developments include, the Position Sensor and the Radar which helps the vehicle to understand its position in the world, detecting and measuring the speed in proportion with the other vehicles on the road.
According to Techcrunch, the car has several other characteristics such as the project's zero per cent accident rate in its five year history of invention.
The entire purpose of the self-driving car project is to make it possible for cars to react to their environment with 100 percent accuracy, avoiding the 93 percent of accidents that happen on the road each year due to human error, reports revealed.
The company is now in talks with automobile manufacturers for its production but a time frame of 6 years has been predicted before the first model would come into the market.

3 astronauts return to Earth

A Russian Soyuz space capsule carrying three astronauts who had spent a half-year aboard the International Space Station landed Wednesday in the steppes of Kazakhstan.
The landing occurred on schedule with the capsule descending under a white parachute. It had undocked from the orbiting laboratory some 260 miles (418 kilometers) above the Earth about three hours earlier.
Russian Mikhail Tyurin, American Rick Mastracchio and Koichi Wakata of Japan had spent 188 days in space.
They were pulled from the hatch at the top of the capsule and maneuvered down a slide into lounge chairs set up nearby and given brief medical assessments as they readjusted to gravity after six months of weightlessness. All appeared to be in good condition and Tyurin was heard joking that he'd like some red wine.
Russians Alexander Skvortsov and Oleg Artemyev and American Steve Swanson remain aboard the station. Three more astronauts are to launch for the station on May 28.

The landing came less than a day after Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said Russia wouldn't continue cooperating with the United States on the 15-nation ISS past 2020, as NASA had hoped. The United States has relied on Russian Soyuz capsules to fly to and from the space station since NASA retired its space shuttle fleet. NASA hopes that private companies such as Space X will be able to develop rockets and capsules to fly astronauts to the space station within a few years.

$103K for portrait of girl who was shot by Taliban

A British artist's portrait of a young Pakistani girl who was shot by the Taliban for campaigning for girls' education brought in more than $100,000 at auction Wednesday the 14th May, 2014.
Christie's said the painting of Malala Yousafzai by Jonathan Yeo sold for $102,500, including the buyer's premium.
Yeo painted Yousafzai in 2013 after she started attending a school in Birmingham, England, where she now lives.
The sale proceeds will go to the Malala Fund charity. The fund said the money would in turn be given to Nigerian nonprofits that focus on education for women and girls in the wake of the kidnapping of more than 300 schoolgirls in that country.
The painting hung in the National Portrait Gallery in London last year for an exhibition of Yeo's portraits of well-known figures, including Sienna Miller, Kevin Spacey and Rupert Murdoch.
Malala was 15 when she was shot in 2012 as she traveled to her Pakistani school. President Barack Obama has called her the "bravest girl in the world."
In an interview last week, Yeo said he wanted the portrait to capture "this extraordinary dichotomy" of someone with "enormous power and wisdom" but who is still very young.
"Her birth instinct isn't self-pity but rather what else she could do to help other girls in her position," Yeo said.
He said he spent "a lot of time chatting" with her and "hearing her world views and what her life is like" before sitting down to paint her.
Yeo, whose works are also in the Royal Collection, said he depicted her doing homework to reflect the irony that "the simple everyday thing she's doing was what created the cataclysmic change in her life that nearly killed her."

When the portrait was finished, Yeo said, Malala told him "it's how she sees herself."

Golden handshake for 5,000 employees of Nokia's Chennai plant

Nokia, which recently sold its mobile unit to U.S software giant Microsoft, has reduced the workforce at its Chennai plant by around 5,000 employees through a voluntary retirement scheme (VRS).
The Chennai plant, which was set up back in 2006 when the company was doing well, employs close to 7,500 people. Out of this 7,500 employee base, close to 5,000 people have now opted for the VRS scheme, which Nokia had introduced last month as a cost-cutting measure.
The scheme, which promises a firm financial footing to all employees who choose to take it up, was valid until May 14, and, therefore, came to an end on Wednesday.
According to sources, the plant’s workers want the company to extend the scheme to give time for the Tamil Nadu Government to further assess the situation.
The company’s Chennai plant became the focal point of a multi-million dollar tax dispute earlier this year, and was consequently blocked by tax authorities from becoming a part of the Microsoft deal.
Nokia currently operates the plant as a contract manufacturer for the U.S software giant.
The plant’s workers have faced an uncertain future since that time and have repeatedly protested against their contract manufacturing fate, which they claim will give them reduced job security.
The situation over the last four months has caused a great amount of stress to the company’s workers, with several suicide attempts having taken place over the last month.
The company, on Wednesday, also laid out the details of its famed Bridge programme and how exactly it would help the Chennai plant workers. According to a statement, Nokia will work with industry experts “to identify new employment areas, developing suitable trainings and skill employees based on their areas of interest.”

The company will also provide “limited Bridge grants” to support the entrepreneurial or academic ambitions of employees that have worked with Nokia for six years or more.

Text of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s last address to the nation

My Fellow Citizens,

I address you today for the last time as Prime Minister of India.
Ten years ago, when I was entrusted with this responsibility, I entered upon it with diligence as my tool, truth as my beacon and a prayer that I might always do the right thing.
Today, as I prepare to lay down office, I am aware that well before the final judgment that we all await from the Almighty, there is judgment in the court of public opinion that all elected officials and governments are required to submit themselves to.
Fellow citizens, each one of us should respect the judgement that you have delivered. The just concluded elections have deepened the foundations of our democratic polity.
As I have said on many occasions, my life and tenure in public office are an open book. I have always tried to do my best in serving this great nation of ours.
In the last ten years, we as a country have seen many successes and achievements that we should be proud of. Today, India is a far stronger country in every respect than it was a decade ago. I give credit for these successes to all of you. However, there is still vast latent development potential in our country and we must collectively work hard to realize it.
As I leave office, my abiding memory will be the love and kindness that I have always received from you. I owe everything to this country, this great land of ours where I, an underprivileged child of Partition, was empowered enough to rise and occupy high office. It is both a debt that I will never be able to repay and a decoration that I will always wear with pride.
Friends, I am confident about the future of India. I firmly believe that the emergence of India as a major powerhouse of the evolving global economy is an idea whose time has come. Blending tradition with modernity and unity with diversity, this nation of ours can show the way forward to the world. Serving this nation has been my privilege. There is nothing more that I could ask for.
I wish the incoming government every success as it embarks on its task and pray for even greater successes for our nation.

Thank you. Jai Hind.

Turkey mining disaster: death toll rises to 282

The death toll in the coal mine explosion and fire in western Turkey — the worst mine disaster to have occurred in the country — has increased to 282 on Wednesday the 14th May, 2014.
Anti-government protests broke out in the mining town of Soma, as well as Istanbul and the capital, Ankara, with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan being heckled as he tried to show concern.
The display of anger could have significant repercussions for the Turkish leader, who is widely expected to run for president in the August election, although he is yet to announce his candidacy.
Tensions were high as hundreds of relatives and miners jostled outside the mine’s entrance on Wednesday, waiting for news amidst a heavy police presence.
Energy Minister Taner Yildiz had earlier said that 787 people were inside the coal mine at the time of Tuesday’s explosion, and 363 of the miners had been rescued.
The death toll topped a 1992 gas explosion that killed 263 workers near Turkey’s Black Sea port of Zonguldak. It also left 150 miners still unaccounted for.
Workers were trying late on Wednesday to reach the bodies of up to 22 people trapped in one zone. Some of the workers were 1,400 feet deep inside the mine.
One rescue worker who declined to be named said he led a ten-man team about half a mile down into the mine’s tunnels, where they recovered three bodies before being forced to flee because of smoke from burning coal. Rescue operations were halted for several hours on Thursday morning because high gas concentrations in the mine needed to be cleared.
Mr. Erdogan declared three days of national mourning and postponed a trip to Albania to visit the mine. He warned that some radical groups would try to use the disaster to discredit his government.
In downtown Soma, protesters, most in their teens and 20s, faced off against riot police in front of the ruling NKP party headquarters, smashing its windows with rocks.
Mr. Erdogan has been dogged by corruption allegations and was forced to oust four government ministers in December after they were implicated in a police-bribery probe. The scandal deepened after audio recordings were posted on the Internet suggesting corruption by the Prime Minister and his family members.

15 crew members indicted over South Korean ferry disaster

Officials said prosecutors have indicted 15 crew members — four of them on homicide charges — over last month’s ferry disaster in South Korea.

The indictment was filed on Thursday on 15th May, 2014 in Gwangju District Court. The trial date will be decided in a few days.

Prosecutors said they brought homicide charges against the ship’s captain and three other crew members because they failed to carry out their duties to protect the ship’s passengers.

Eleven other crew members were indicted for alleged negligence and abandoning passengers in need.

The 15 crew members, all involved in the ship’s navigation, were the first group of people rescued when the Sewol was listing badly.

CPI(M) two seats short of EC norm for national party status

It was the Communist Party of India which went into this election with the fear of losing national party status but now it has in its desolate corner big brother, CPI (Marxist).
With just nine seats in its kitty from three States, the CPI(M) is two short of the criteria that has afforded it national party status for years now. One of the various benchmarks set by the Election Commission for according national party status to a political party is 11 seats in the Lok Sabha from at least three States.
Now, the CPI(M) is hoping to use the two Independents — who contested the elections in Kerala as part of the Left Democratic Front — to build a case for retaining the national party status. “When we are issued a show-cause by the Election Commission on why the national party status should not be withdrawn from the CPI(M), we plan to state that these two Independents will be joining the parliamentary party; taking our strength in the Lok Sabha to the required 11,” said a Polit Bureau member, while conceding it is a long shot.
The near decimation of the Left comes at a time when the Left in general and the CPI(M) in particular is extremely demoralised and still nursing the body blows delivered by the Trinamool Congress in successive elections from 2008.
What has been particularly disappointing is that the Left had hoped to make some gains in West Bengal this time round when the field had opened from a direct fight with the TMC to a multi-cornered battle, with the Bharatiya Janata Party emerging as a strong contender in the State, courtesy the Modi factor.
Not only has the TMC managed to further push the Left out, ironically the two seats that the CPI(M) won in West Bengal — Murshidabad and Raiganj — were both from traditional Congress strongholds. Even veteran Basudeb Acharia — who had withstood the 2009 onslaught of the TMC which was then in coalition with the Congress — has been defeated this time in Bankura.
Needless to say, the CPI(M) insists that the verdict does not reflect the state of the Left in West Bengal as the verdict was “distorted” by “widespread rigging, violence and intimidation” targeting the Left Front. “The Election Commission failed to intervene to rectify the situation from the third to the fifth round of polling in West Bengal,” the CPI(M) Polit Bureau said in a statement.
While the party has retained its hold over Tripura, the CPI(M) bettered its performance in Kerala by a seat; holding on to existing seats. Though the party had drawn flak for fielding nearly half-a-dozen independent candidates to reach out to the Christian community of Kerala, this strategy has borne fruit with two of them winning.
